It is through the torment, craving, and admiration of love that we create true art, which is beauty and therefore becomes a thing to be loved. Be true to the artist that is you. The love you eventually find in another will be a magnificent thing that flies far over the heads of those who sloppily paint love by numbers behind masks of convention. Great love may not be quick but it is always easy for an artist.
As far as being a witness to life, I'd say consider yourself lucky. Real artists are simply great witnesses.
And also know that love is commitment, a giving up of parts of yourself to make room for the other person. Our heroic artist has put so much of himself into becoming who he is.. who is left when he hollows out these places for love? I'd say do not judge one state against the other. Instead, drink deeply from whichever cup is available and know that however sweet the taste, you will always reserve some thirst for the cup that is not presently in hand.
References :
I am the steppenwolf. I strive to achieve the Schopenhauer ideal. Is it possible to substitute love with art?
Ohh god i try, i do, after all how oblivious is the entire world to my misery. The world's indifference I could accept but not her's; they are both faces of the same coin. So I have made art my mistress and have sought the friendship of tennyson and whitman, but ohh how they revel in their cold and empty mockery of life, for what good is the glorification of beauty without ever have possessed it? Tennyson wrote down the formulations of love but poetry is reserved strictly for the steppenwolf, who must content himself with description rather than experience. I always get the feeling I am nothing more than a witness to life.
